How to Apply for a PAN Card

Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a unique alphanumeric combination issued to all juristic entities identifiable under the Indian Income Tax Act 1961. It can also be used as an important ID proof.



There are currently two modes of application for a PAN Card - Offline & Online.

i) Offline. 

In an Offline mode of application you can either submit your application form yourself or can take the help of a professional Chartered accountant or an agent.

  • At first you will have to procure form 49A. Fill it properly following all the instructions. You will also need a recent color photograph for the same.
  • Once the form is filled, affix a copy of Address proof and ID proof along with a processing fee of Rs 94, before submitting it to your nearest TIN application centre. After submitting the form you will receive an acknowledgement number, which will help to get the status of your PAN application.
  • Your PAN card will be dispatched to you within a month.
ii) Online.

Online mode is less cumbersome and more efficient as compared to offline mode.
  • Duly read all the guidelines before filling the application. Now fill the form, Pay a sum of Rs. 94+ surcharge.
  • After the payment is made you will receive an acknowledgement slip. print this on an A4 size paper and paste a recent passport size color photograph. Affix a copy of address proof and proof of ID before mailing it to the following address : 
             Income TAX PAN Services Unit,
             National Securities Depository Limited,
             Third Floor, Sapphire Chambers,
             Near Baner Telephone Exchange,
             Baner, Pune - 411045.

  • On the Envelope write in bold letters " APPLICATION FOR PAN - [Acknowledgement Number]".
  • PAN Card will be dispatched to you within 15 days of receipt of acknowledgement form.

  3. Anything can be possible. You can at least ensure that you don’t commit any negligence. Do not handover copy of PAN to any one for no reason. Whenever you are submitting PAN for any purpose, writing down the purpose (just online) touching to the edges of PAN or little across of it and keep no much space between image of PAN and signature or the note you mention about the purpose.
